How do you feel when you have to spare your voice for whatever reason? I tend to feel a bit more down, incomplete. Once in winter I really got it and could hardly say two sentences without interruption for a while because of my cough. Well, in this case, mental training or ear training are also a good thing and can be done without much effort. “Simply” listen attentively. Imagine how you would produce certain sounds yourself. With what setting, how much air, what feeling and so on. One day on the road to recovery, I realized that whistling didn’t make me cough, so I finally got to try out and record some vocal melodies I had written in the meantime, because a catchy topline doesn’t just translate well when singing. As a vocalist, what can you do to keep your voice healthy or make it sound better more quickly, apart from a healthy diet and a smoke- and alcohol-free lifestyle? As we are largely made up of water, we also need a lot of it to live and sing with sound and suppleness. Especially if you are feeling under the weather, you should not neglect your water supply. Alcohol draws moisture from the body and it is often used as an ingredient in a wide variety of areas, so it is worth checking the ingredients and ingredients list of medicines or aids more closely, it might surprise you what is there. Furthermore, even when healthy, it is not really advisable to whisper or breathe. Coughing rhetorically is also suboptimal; it’s better to pretend to swallow something or, if possible, drink something or eat a sweet containing Icelandic moss, for example. If you would like to do a little more for your voice, gentle steam baths or inhalations with essential oils suitable for you as well as unsweetened herbal teas such as camomile, sage or ginger to drink or gargle would be interesting. A nebulizer with saline solution could also provide relief for the nose. An infrared lamp helps with sore throats, hypothermia or for the mind. Bubbling can also help with voice irritation or inflammation. Buffered vitamin C, cinnamon, turmeric and echinacea can support the healing process in an anti-inflammatory and restorative way. DISCLAIMER: Please generally check whether these tips are suitable for you. Would you like to try one or the other? Perhaps you’re wondering what a bubble tube is and how it could improve your well-being? Then let me know, I would be delighted to hear or read from you.
