Improvisation is often associated with stress and chaos. But why? I think it’s a wonderful feeling to embrace the unexpected with calmness and without judgment. Improvisation offers the chance to be creative and discover new paths. We all know the scenario: Your favorite product is out of stock, a key ingredient for dinner is missing, there’s traffic on your usual route. These situations challenge our improvisation skills, and often, we handle them better than expected. It’s similar in music. To feel comfortable improvising, you need a small framework, a structure. It usually looks like this: one person starts playing, others join in and build on it. This creates something casual, unique, creative for the moment, something we can also call a jam session. For musical improvisation as a vocalist or songwriter, just for yourself and without any worries, I recommend: singing along to instrumental tracks, using apps that play chord progressions, trying a song you like in a different style or using household noises like a vacuum cleaner, washer machine or a blender as rhythm as everything can be music. Do you have any other ideas? Are you now more excited about improvisation? I look forward to hearing from you.
