VOCAL DEVELOPMENT

What do you need to develop a great singing voice? Although artistry is very individual and specific, my answer to this topic is always the same: a functioning vocal body, patience, acceptance, the willingness to listen holistically, to discover and develop oneself as an instrument, and personality. In my opinion, there is no such thing as ‘just a little singing.’ Because we have chosen an instrument that cannot simply be covered, turned off, stored in a drawer or storage box until the next training session. We live and experience; we are voice. All of this depends on the day, feelings, and willpower. Beyond all the valuable techniques we can and should certainly acquire, self-awareness and mindfulness are always somehow in focus. Vocalists are, first and foremost, good listeners to me. They listen to themselves, how they sound in different moods and by activating specific areas. They listen to the music, to their colleagues, how the interplay develops, whether it becomes softer, more energetic, faster, happier, or whatever – to fit accordingly into the performance, into that one special moment. They listen to their audience and make sure they are always genuinely emotional so that these emotions can captivate their listeners. Well, what we feel and perceive, we can analyze. That can be refined and, one day, recalled again and regularly. All of this seems pretty exciting to me, not just in relation to music, doesn’t it? What do you think? I would be very happy to hear from you.
