PRACTICING OR REHARSING

I often can’t resist a particular question when someone tells me they’ve been rehearsing again. My focused, goal-oriented, and somewhat efficiency-driven self would really like to know if there’s a specific, concrete intention behind this action. Not to evaluate the situation, because as long as I’m not directly involved or asked for support, it’s not my concern, as unsolicited advice is always a tricky matter. So, I ask on behalf of a friend. Her name is Reflection. I then ask for her, “With what goal. For what reason?” For me, you don’t just rehearse for the sake of rehearsing. Out of sheer habit. For pastime. Because the space is so nice and the drinks taste the best there. Rehearsal is like simulating something specific, the testing phase, the exciting moment that scientists and many other visionaries patiently wait for. It’s when the rocket is finally ready for launch and emotions are already in space. So, I ask from the heart, with great anticipation, with full artistic empathy: “Awesome! What’s coming up next?” The simple, classic response: “Nothing. Why?” Without wanting to get too philosophical, it wasn’t actually rehearsal, but practice. Practiced together – because it can be more fun together, entirely understandable. Still practiced, not rehearsed. The dress rehearsal is also so named because it’s more akin to a simulation than a practice. You practice more often or regularly than dress rehearsals, right? What do you think? I’d love to hear from you.
